Mataró is a city where you can discover the vestiges of Roman Empire places as the town of Torre Llauder, or the Roman baths Can Xammar. Also reveals the modernist legacy with works by Puig i Cadafalch, and the Nau Gaudí Acon a collection of contemporary art.

Mataro owes much to the Sea, its beaches today attract many visitors to Barcelona and elsewhere in the interior of Catalonia, the city in Roman times and traded through Mar.

The rise of the city of Mataró came with the railroad, the first line of Spain in 1848, which brought visitors and wealth to the city. He could grow thanks to the textile industry. Today with more 120,000 is a focus of tourism that reinvents and culturally discover, a shopping center and a city that welcomes visitors with warmth.

Casa Coll i Regàs

It is a modernist building designed by the Catalan architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch in 1898 commissioned by Joaquim Coll i Regas, a major textile manufacturer Mataro.

The work of Puig i Cadafalch has new materials used at the time as iron and ceramics and traditional materials like brick recover.

The house is not very wide because of the high price of land in the area. The interior features spacious rooms and great lighting, which creates an effect to make the building appear larger. The building consists of two floors connected by a grand staircase and a low attic. The decorative element, especially achieved through pottery, is present in every room, especially in the central hall, lit with natural light from a large window. It is inspired in religious and floral motifs.

All parts of the house have a wide decorative function. The façade stucco ornaments, decorated ceramics, wrought iron railings on the windows and a large sculpture: the Filosa; Eusebi Arnau above the door.

Roman Village of  Torre Llauder

In 1964 it was declared a historic-artistic monument of national interest.

The Roman villa of Torre Llauder is a manor house built in the late rural character of “first century” ac, following the model of holding Roman times. Throughout its history the villa went through different stages of construction. For the first time they have located the remains of a workshop production of amphorae. At the beginning of “first century” dc the basic structures of the buildings that have survived until today were built. Between the end of the second century and the beginning of the third century the house went through moments of splendor and was expanded with the construction of new units. A late third century a period of decline began and some apartments were abandoned. The life of the villa lasted, but so high median age.

.In 1961 the remains of a large stately villa were discovered, the City of Mataró acquired the land of the deposit and the first excavations were made. In 1980, it opened to the public a first phase and in 1988 the entire facility.

The Prison of Mataró

The building is located in the Riera, the building stopped working as a prison in 1967.

View from the front, the appearance is that of a fortified house, halfway between a palace and a castle. The plan structure of a semicircle is preceded by a rectangle. The construction of a semicircle with the aim of adopting the panopticon prison system architecture proposed by Jeremy Bentham, where the view of all the cells is guaranteed from the center of patio.The rectangular body was meant to administrative units, and the semicircular was where the yard and the cells on the ground floor and first floor was. The portion corresponding to the straight lines of the front and side walls is made of brick with large arched windows with keystones and stones at the corners of the facade.

La Nau Gaudí

It’s the first building constructed Antoni Gaudí and the only one who was not promoted neither by the bourgeoisie nor the Church, but by one of the first textile workers’ cooperatives.

The Gaudí building or warehouse covers an area of almost six hundred square meters. Which include the development of the arches as elements sostenedores.sin resorting to columns or walls, but articulating with iron screws small sections of wood to form a slender and sturdy arches.

Abandoned lasting many years, in 2002 the City Council of Mataró decided, under the so-called “International Year of Gaudí” restore and rehabilitate it to give it a public use and entrusted the project to mataronés architect Manuel Brullet Tenas, who, respecting Gaudí guidelines it has got a modern and a versatile and ambivalent space, current headquarters of Bassat Collection.

La Riera & Plaza Santa Anna

The Place has been the walkside of Mataronins for decades, a meeting place, the heart of the city where many celebrationts are done and the place of city hall

Mataro Main Street was built of new plant during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Houses and mansions of the era are only the houses of Can Fité, at the corner of the street d’en Pujol, and Can Palau, no. 63, with the facade restored in the last century, preserved in the entrance, ground floor, a small chapel of the Virgin (1683).

It is also the commercial hub of the center of Mataro with boutiques, shops of all kinds, bars and restaurants.
The building begins in Central Park and ends at the Plaza Santa Anna.

Plaza de Santa Ana

The baroque square formed in the eighteenth century remains only the church of Piarist School in Santa Ana. It is very transformed and adapted to mpodernos time, a place with terraces to drink quietly and Xtreamer of the Mediterranean life and city Mataró.

The waterfront and the port of Mataró

The port has a wide range of restaurants, terraces and entertainment. It is also a marina and has a large number of berths.

Mataró has 2.2 km of granite sand beaches

Beach of Ponent:

It is a familiar character beach located between the port and the pier located at the underpass Avenue Ernest Lluch. Coarse sand, has a length of 180 meters and an average width of 30 meters.

Beach of Varadero:

It is located between the piers of the old Yacht Club and the Port of Mataró, it has a length of 765 meters and an average width of 125 meters. Sporty family and is one of the most emblematic beaches, because of its proximity to the town center and its size.

Beach of Callao:

Located between the Rambla de Sant Simó and the breakwater of the old Nautical Club of Mataró. It has a length of 400 meters and an average width of 50 meters.

Beach of  Sant Simó:

It extends from the Rambla de Sant Simó to the area of Castell de Mata hotel. It has a less urban setting than the other beaches Mataró.Tiene an approximate length of 1,000 meters and has an average width thirty meters to the bunker of the Civil War. It is divided into an area more family use and a nudist.

Museums of  Mataró

Founded 1941 is installed in an old 1565 manor house, one of the first bourgeois of Mataro.

The building is a building with ground floor and two floors of Renaissance style. The façade shows the keystone portal and windows framed by moldings and brackets. The interior retains the original structure, highlighting the wood paneling.

Collections: The Museum’s collections are varied, both in origin and type, and include prehistoric archaeological materials, Iberians, Romans, medieval and modern, natural specimens, historical artifacts and a collection of art composed of paintings and religious sculptures, Baroque paintings modernist and art nouveau. It highlights a series of etchings of Goya.

Religious heritage of Mataro

Basilica ofSanta María de Mataró 

Although fifteenth century early Christian origins, it was transformed into a Baroque building in the seventeenth century. Inside an important baroque altarpiece dedicated to the Virgin of the Roser, and the Capella dels Dolors, where is the set of Baroque painting most important eighteenth century in Catalonia, designed by Antonio Viladomat it is preserved.

The church of Santa Anna

The church of the former Piarist School of Santa Anna has a Latin cross, with three naves and a dome over the crossing. The cover was on 1789 by Josep Guardia German escolapio as Carles Moretó attributed to trace. His style is fully baroque, with a pediment of wavy lines chaired by an image of the saint.

It’s architectural ensemble founded in 1741. It is an exemplary building baroque spirit of the Counter Reformation in Mataró: solid architecture as a castle and austere as a monastery.

The hospital of Sant Jaume y Santa Magdalena

It was built in the eighteenth century. To emphasize the cloister of the time.

Second half of the sixteenth century. It has a single nave with roof.

Mataró Park – Shopping

The Mataró Parc ase Mall opened in June 2000 and has not stopped growing. It presents a wide and attractive range of leisure. It has an area of 140 540 m2, of which 18,000 m2 are intended to Great Alcampo area and 52,000 m2 of shops, as well as other outdoor terraces and Cinema, with 12 rooms Company Paramount Universal, besides of having parking for 3,500.
